Responsibilities
1. Implements intra-operative nursing care in accordance with PCS
division standards of practice, hospital, community, national
standards andregulatory agency requirements.
1.1. Monitors, revises, and adapts current specialty nursing
practice in light of changing concepts, methods, techniques and
written standards ofcare.
1.2. Enforces written intra-operative standards of care relevant to
operating room specialty services and maintains standards within
area accepted practice parameters.
1.3. Executes monitoring mechanism for assessment of specialty
delivered care by performing regular audits.
1.4. Effectively evaluates assigned staff performance and
competencies via direct observation based on standards of care.
2. Organizes and implements specialty program modification and
development based on departmental goals/objectives and physician
needs.
2.1. Develops realistic annual objectives for specialty service as
directed by Nurse Manager.
2.2. Actively participates in the review, identification, and
updating of departmental policies, standard operational procedures
(SOP) and protocol.
2.3. Actively engages and seeks staff points of view for specialty
program development and practice changes.
2.4. Actively participates in quality improvement program
development and implementation including but not limited to: a.
FCOTS (First Case On Time Starts) b. TAT (Turnaround Times) C.
Monitors and performs unit audits on weekly basis
2.5. Ensures specialty services staff are competent. Works in
conjunction with educator to assess and evaluate learning needs of
new staff
3. Communicates operating room concerns, operations, practice
changes and medical-legal issues to Nurse Manager.
3.1. Resolves problems at lowest level and uses appropriate chain
of command to address program areas.
3.2. Prepares and submits monthly specialty activity report to
Nurse Manager. Be aware of case volumes, block utilization, delay
reasons and same day cancelations.
3.3. Meets regularly with specialty service staff and provides
meeting minutes within 48 hours.
3.4. Confronts personnel issues appropriately and resolves within
department and hospital policy guidelines.
3.5. Executes disciplinary measures in collaboration with Nurse
Manager within specialty service.
3.6. Collaborates with Nurse Manager and performs yearly
performance evaluation reviews with specialty service staff.
3.7. Hold specialty service staff members accountable for
performance through service assignments/responsibilities.
3.8. Communicates physician issues to Nurse Manager and provides
follow-up to physicians in a timely manner.
3.9. Maintains daily visibility to all staff and surgeons
addressing any operational issues. Ensure RLs are entered in a
timely manner.
4. Directs and coordinates nursing care activities of surgical
specialty services supervised.
4.1. Provides direct patient care (40%, 2 days per week) to
maintain clinical and technical expertise and to serve as a role
model to staff.
4.2. Plans and anticipates surgeons and case-procedure needs in
advance (planning at lease 5 days out) using schedules and
preference cards to verify procedures for correctness.
4.3. Exhibits supportive management performance behavior that
fosters trust and confidence to staff, physicians, and other
support personnel. Be visible and accessible to staff , surgeons,
and interdisciplinary teams
4.4. Plans daily work assignments and staffing schedule (reviewing
one week in advance) to ensure appropriate coverage of skill mix
for procedures. Collaborates with Control Desk Coordinator in the
assignment of specialty service staff.
4.5. Actively participates in mentoring process providing
written/verbal feedback on performance to Control Desk Coordinator
and Nurse Manager. Meet with all new staff rotating through service
lines on a weekly basis
5. Facilitates specialty service materials needs through systematic
maintenance of materials resources.
5.1. Effectively coordinates processing, storage, restocking and
inventory of specialty instruments, supplies and equipment in
collaboration with materials staff.
5.2. Establishes par levels for chargeable and non-chargeable
specialty items in collaboration with materials staff.
5.3. Works directly with surgeons, teams, and Business Service
staff to ensure that all materials are available for surgical
procedures.
5.4. Proactively ensures that all specialty supplies and
instruments are available for scheduled procedures. Notify
Materials Management team and NM of any foreseen issues or
delays.
5.5. Actively participates in capital budgetary process
collaborating with service line physicians and submits requests in
SBAR format to NM and Director.
5.6. Audit staff documentation of chargeable items for correctness.
Monitor open/unused items and coach staff for opportunities.
6. Supports and executes materials management program developed by
the hospital and department.
6.1. Works with CSS to assess and streamline instrument tray
contents to ensure effective efficiency and utilization of
instruments. Informs staff and surgeons of any updates
6.2. Monitors area waste and controls losses of instruments and
equipment. Be aware of instrumentation out for repair and make
adjustments for keeping scheduled cases going.
6.3. Regularly reviews information on case-procedure preference
card to ascertain control of waste.
6.4. Actively participates in product identification and
standardization.
6.5. Meets daily with the CSS, Preference Card Coordinator to
review materials and instrumentation needs for next day cases.
6.6. Adheres to and supports vendor control and standardization
policy and procedures as defined by hospital and department.
7. Maintains efficient resource information of case-procedures
performed by assigned surgical specialties.
7.1. Enforces the preference card maintenance guidelines in
conjunction with Preference Card Associate.
7.2. Meets with any new service line surgeons to assist in
onboarding of preference cards, procedures, equipment, and
supplies.
7.3. Informs Supply Chain Manager when equipment/supply resources
are not available due to breakage, back order, etc.
7.4. Ensures that proper reporting of defective products or broken
equipment are handled in the correct way according to hospital
policy.
8. Ensures timely completion of scheduled cases assigned to
specialty services.
8.1. Collaborates with the Control Desk Coordinator to efficiently
plan the coordination of surgical cases scheduled to services by
delegating leadership role to staff with proven organizational
skills.
8.2. Collaborates with the Control Desk Coordinator to provide
required resources that balance case acuity and staff skill
demands.
8.3. Maximizes utilization of staff by matching the case volumes to
staffing numbers and proactively addressing periods of increased
volume or low census.
8.4. Identifies and plans cross training needs to service lines,
working with the Clinical Desk Coordinator to implement an action
plan
9. Maintains credentialling requirements..
9.1. Completes 10 CEU's annually.
9.2. Maintains specialty certification.
9.3. Provides 4 independent staff inservices a year.
9.4. Chairs/co-chairs unit based committee and submits minutes
within 48 hours.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Bachelors degree in
Nursing preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 3-5 years experience in assigned specialty services
required. Progressive leadership experience desirable with proven
track record ofsuccess in program development or participation,
program implementation in areas of clinical patient care
management, staff development and specialty services materials
management.
LICENSURE:
Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of
Connecticut. All newly hired Registered Nurses must have current
BCLS certification or obtain within one month of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMAND:
Requires prolonged standing; walking; use of sight, hearing and
touch; moving/lifting patients of verying weights.

Position Overview
Responsible and accountable for planning, organizing, directing and
controlling of surgical sub-specialty services. Collaborates with
the NM in the preparation of revenue and expense budgets including
human, financial and material resources. Provides clinical
leadership through development and maintenance of standards of
specialty surgery, clinical practice, participation in nursing
division and surgery sections committee. Works collaboratively with
Surgery Section Chiefs to promote proactive, effective, interactive
shared governance relationship in the management of specialty
services. Essential duties and responsibilities include the
